In architecture, details matter.

At Q4A we all know that we need to pay attention to the minute details in our work. Accuracy and precision come with the nature of what we do: there is no option. Failing to do so is costly, exposes us to risk and can compromise our firm’s reputation.

Although paying attention to details is an individual responsibility, and one that I think speaks to individuals’ passion about their work, it is also a collective responsibility for everyone in the sector. Just like at school where we would always want someone to proofread an essay, we are responsible to check each other’s work, review, and discuss our deliverables.

We are a firm that prides itself on being approachable and open, so we try to apply that principle to everything we do.

In architecture to ask someone from a different project team to have a look through a submission can make the world of difference on whether a drawing set or submission is “good” or flawless. Investing this time early, will absolutely be easier than correcting small errors later in the process.
This approach to achieving perfection is not the only way to become exceptionally good at this aspect of our work. At Q4A we encourage all team members to take a break and review their own work from scratch. To print out their work and look at it off screen. To take advantage of technology and tools that can help correct language and tone. These are all small tips that absolutely elevate what we do.

My final thought is to work with pride and ownership. I always remind my team how important it is to think of who will be inhabiting our work. The real people it will touch and how important it is that it is done well.

This will help ground what they do and separate it from being “job” to something they are invested in and proud of.
